What is difference between synchronous and asynchronous motor?

In practice, synchronous motors are used in specialised applications like power factor correction, driving a load at low and constant speed, while asynchronous motors are used in general purposes like driving the mechanical loads. Also, the operation of an asynchronous motor is easier than that of a synchronous motor.

An induction motor or asynchronous motor is an AC electric motor in which the electric current in the rotor needed to produce torque is obtained by electromagnetic induction from the magnetic field of the stator winding. An induction motor can therefore be made without electrical connections to the rotor.

Why is it called asynchronous motor?

The fundamental difference between these two motoThree Phase AC Asynchronous Motor by Semcrs is that the speed of the rotor relative to the speed of the stator is equal for synchronous motors, while the rotor speed in induction motors is less than its synchronous speed. This is why induction motors are also known as asynchronous motors.

One type of AC motor is the asynchronous or induction AC motor. Asynchronous or induction motors consist of a stator with a winding capable of producing a rotating magnetic field, and a rotor with a shorted conductor winding in which a current is induced by the rotating magnetic field.
An asynchronous motor has a passive rotor that is short-circuited permanently (squirrel-cage rotor) or temporarily (see Slip ring rotor). It can produce up to several megawatts and is
most frequently used as a standard three-phase motor in industrial applications.
What is the working principle of asynchronous motor?

The operating principle of an asynchronous motor involves creating an induced current in a conductor when the latter cuts off the lines of force in a magnetic field, hence the name "induction motor". The combined action of the induced current and the magnetic field exerts a driving force on the motor rotor.
Above a certain size, synchronous motors are not self-starting motors. This property is due to the inertia of the rotor; it cannot instantly follow the rotation of the magnetic field of the stator.
